In plain words
−0.67% y/y
What it is. Headline inflation tracks the average change in the prices households pay for a basket of goods and services, compared with the same month a year earlier. Using the same month a year earlier strips out regular seasonal price patterns such as harvest or festive swings. The figure is an average across the whole basket, so a household that spends mostly on food or fuel can face a different rate from the headline. Asset prices such as land and property sales sit outside the basket.
Lower is better. Lower inflation protects what wages, pensions and savings can buy, which is why a lower reading is better for this measure. The latest figure is −0.67% y/y for Sep 2026, up from −1.8% y/y in Sep 2025, a change of 1.1 percentage points over the year. Since Oct 2024 the series has ranged from a low of −4.3% y/y in Mar 2026 to a high of 7.1% y/y in Mar 2025. The current reading sits in the lower part of that range, well below the early 2025 peak and above the Mar 2026 trough.
Why it matters. With prices on average slightly lower than a year ago, a household's money buys marginally more than it did in Sep 2025. Prices have been falling more slowly since Mar 2026, which leaves firms selling into a market where prices are close to flat and gives them little room to raise margins through price increases. The state can plan budgets without pressure from fast-rising prices. The next monthly reading will show whether the rate crosses zero.
