In plain words
2.6% y/y
What it is. Headline inflation follows the cost of a fixed basket of goods and services that households buy, and compares each month with the same month a year earlier. Every item is included, so volatile prices such as food and fuel move the figure as much as steady ones do. A price jump stays in the annual rate for twelve months and then drops out, which can make the rate fall sharply even when prices keep rising month to month.
Lower is better. Lower inflation means wages, pensions and savings lose their buying power more slowly, and it makes household and business planning easier. The latest figure is 2.6% y/y for August 2026, down from 4.6% y/y in August 2025, a fall of 2 percentage points over the year. Since Sep 2024 the rate has ranged from a high of 5.2% y/y in September 2024 to a low of 2.2% y/y in March 2026. The current reading sits near the bottom of that range, a little above the March 2026 low.
Why it matters. At 2.6% y/y, the prices of everyday purchases such as food, transport and household bills are rising slowly, so a given wage or social grant stretches further than it did a year ago. Firms can agree wage deals and set prices with less guesswork about input costs. For the state, slower price growth eases the pressure on spending that has to keep pace with the cost of living, such as public wages and support payments.
