In plain words
5% y/y
What it is. Headline inflation tracks the price of a fixed basket of goods and services bought by households, and reports how much the basket's cost has changed compared with the same month a year earlier. Because it compares against a year before, a large price jump in one month keeps the figure high for twelve months and then drops out all at once. The measure covers everyday consumer spending and leaves out asset prices such as land, and it gives an average that can differ from the experience of any single household.
Lower is better. Lower is better because rising prices reduce what a given income can buy, and fast price rises hit people on fixed or cash incomes hardest. Slower, steadier price growth also makes it easier for families and businesses to plan. The latest figure, 5% y/y for Jun 2026, is down from 9.9% y/y a year earlier, a fall of 4.8 percentage points. Since Jul 2024 the rate has ranged from a low of 3.1% y/y in Feb 2026 to a high of 13.1% y/y in Feb 2025, so the current reading sits in the lower part of that range, above the low reached in Feb 2026.
Why it matters. Prices are still rising at 5% y/y, so household budgets for food, fuel and rent continue to stretch, though far less than when inflation peaked in Feb 2025. For firms, slower price growth makes costs and wage bargaining easier to forecast. For the state, a lower rate eases pressure on the real value of wages and pensions it pays and on the cost of the goods it buys.
