In plain words
14.3% y/y
What it is. Headline inflation tracks the price of a broad basket of goods and services bought by households, and compares each month's basket cost with the same month a year earlier. Because it looks back a full year, seasonal swings drop out, but a large price jump in one month stays in the annual rate until that month leaves the comparison. It is an average across households, so a family whose spending leans towards food or rent can face a different rate from the headline. It covers what people pay, and leaves out what they earn.
Lower is better. Lower is better because slower price growth lets wages, pensions and savings keep their buying power. The latest figure, for August 2026, is 14.3% y/y, against 1.5% y/y a year earlier, a rise of 12.8 percentage points. Since Sep 2024 the lowest reading was 1.3% y/y in September 2025. The latest figure is also the highest in that span, so the rate has climbed over the past year and now sits at the top of its range.
Why it matters. At 14.3% y/y, Libyan households on fixed pay or holding savings in cash find that the same money buys noticeably less than a year ago, most visibly on everyday purchases. Firms face faster-rising costs and have to decide how much to pass on to customers and how to price contracts. The state faces pressure on public pay and any price support it funds.
