In plain words

6.7% y/y

What it is. Headline inflation tracks the price of a fixed basket of goods and services that households buy, compared with the same month a year earlier. In Madagascar the basket is weighted heavily towards food, so rice and other staples move the figure more than they would in a richer economy. The measure averages across all households and does not show how prices have changed for any one income group or region.

Lower is better. Lower inflation is better because it protects what wages and savings can buy, and it makes prices easier to plan around. The latest figure, 6.7% y/y for March 2026, is down from 8.4% y/y a year earlier, a fall of 1.7 percentage points. Within the range since Apr 2024, it sits near the bottom, just above the low of 6.2% y/y in Jan 2026 and well below the high of 9.5% y/y in Jan 2025.

Why it matters. At 6.7% y/y, prices are still rising faster than many household incomes, so a family buying rice, fuel and transport pays noticeably more than a year ago. Slower price growth than in early 2025 eases some of that pressure on food budgets. For firms and the state, a lower rate makes costs and contracts easier to forecast and reduces the strain of inflation on public wages and spending.
