In plain words
4.4% y/y
What it is. Headline inflation tracks the change in the price of a fixed basket of goods and services that households buy, compared with the same month a year earlier. Statisticians weight each item by its share of typical household spending, so food, housing and transport count for more than small items. Because it covers the average household basket, it can differ from the price rises a particular family feels, and it says nothing about wages or the quality of what is bought.
Lower is better. Lower inflation means money keeps more of its buying power, so savings, wages and fixed incomes stretch further. Higher inflation erodes them, and it tends to push borrowing costs up. At 4.4% y/y in July 2026, Namibia's rate is higher than the 3.5% y/y recorded a year earlier, a rise of 0.88 percentage points. Since Aug 2024 the range runs from a low of 2.1% y/y in March 2026 to a high of 4.4% y/y in August 2024, so the latest reading sits level with the top of that range.
Why it matters. At 4.4% y/y, prices in Namibia are rising faster than they were in March 2026, when inflation touched its lowest point in the window. Households see this in the cost of food, transport and rent, which take up a large share of the budget, and wage rises have to keep pace to hold living standards. Firms face higher input costs and may pass them on, while the central bank has less room to ease interest rates as long as inflation stays near the top of its recent range.
