In plain words
1.3% y/y
What it is. Headline inflation tracks the cost of a fixed basket of goods and services bought by households, with every item included, and compares each month with the same month a year earlier. Because the comparison looks back twelve months, the figure depends on what prices did a year ago as well as on what they are doing now. It averages across the whole basket, so the experience of an individual household or a single product can differ from the headline rate.
Lower is better. Lower inflation means everyday purchases cost little more than before, which protects the buying power of wages and savings. A negative rate means prices are lower than a year earlier. The latest figure is 1.3% y/y for Sep 2026, against −10.1% y/y a year earlier, a rise of 11.4 percentage points. Since Oct 2024 the rate has ranged from a low of −10.7% y/y in Mar 2026 to a high of 5.2% y/y in Oct 2024. The latest reading therefore sits in the upper part of that range and is well above the Mar 2026 low.
Why it matters. At 1.3% y/y, prices in Niger are rising slowly after a spell in which they were falling compared with the year before. Households now face a small yearly increase in what they pay, which is a mild squeeze on incomes. Firms and the state can plan budgets and contracts around a low rate. The path from the Mar 2026 low to the current figure is the one to check in the next releases.
