In plain words
6.7% y/y
What it is. Headline inflation compares the average price of a basket of goods and services bought by households with the same month a year earlier. It covers all items, so food and fuel, which take a large share of household spending, move the figure directly. Each month is set against the same month a year before, so a large price jump in the base month can drop out of the comparison and pull the rate down by itself. Wages, asset prices and the spending pattern of any single household sit outside it.
Lower is better. Lower is better because quick price rises erode what incomes can buy, and households that spend most of their budget on essentials feel it first. The latest figure is 6.7% y/y for Jul 2026, up from 2.7% y/y a year earlier, a rise of 4 percentage points. Since Aug 2024 the range runs from a low of 1.4% y/y in Sep 2024 to a high of 8.4% y/y in May 2026. The latest reading sits in the upper part of that range, below the May 2026 peak.
Why it matters. At 6.7% y/y, the same basket of goods costs Somali households noticeably more in Jul 2026 than it did a year earlier, and any income that has stayed flat buys less. Firms face higher input costs and must decide how much of them to pass on to customers. The state pays more for wages and supplies, which strains a budget set in nominal terms. The next monthly reading will show whether the rate keeps easing from the May 2026 high of 8.4% y/y.
