In plain words

5.6% y/y

What it is. Headline inflation tracks the average change in the prices of a basket of goods and services that households buy, with every item included. Each month it is compared with the same month a year earlier, so a price jump stays in the figure for a full year before dropping out. The result is an average across the basket, so a household's own experience depends on how much of its budget goes on food, rent, transport or other items.

Lower is better. Lower inflation means wages, pensions and savings keep more of their purchasing power, and firms can set prices and contracts with more confidence. The latest figure is 5.7% y/y for July 2026, up from 5.3% y/y in July 2025, a rise of 0.38 percentage points over the year. Since Aug 2024 the series has ranged from a low of 3.2% y/y in April 2025 to a high of 6.7% y/y in October 2024. The current reading sits in the upper part of that range, closer to the high than to the low.

Why it matters. At 5.7% y/y, Tunisian households need pay and pensions to rise at a similar pace to keep their weekly shopping affordable, and savers earning less than that lose value on their deposits. Firms face higher input costs and pressure to raise wages. The state faces a heavier bill for subsidies and for public sector pay settlements.
