In plain words
2.2% of GDP
What it is. Tax revenue measures the compulsory payments that the central government collects, divided by the size of the whole economy. Dividing by GDP lets the figure be compared across years even as prices and output change. Taxes raised by regional or local authorities fall outside the definition, as does any money the state receives from other sources.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because it means the government funds more of its work from taxes collected at home, which gives it a steadier base for spending. The latest figure, for 2024, is 2.2% of GDP, up from 2.1% a year earlier, a rise of 0.17 percentage points. Since 2017 the range runs from a low of 1.6% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 2.3% of GDP in 2018. The current level therefore sits close to the top of its range and just under the 2018 peak.
Why it matters. At 2.2% of GDP the central government collects a small slice of national income, so the money available for public salaries and basic services from domestic taxes is limited. A rise of even a fraction of a percentage point adds noticeably to that budget. Households and firms carry the tax burden today, and the 2018 level of 2.3% of GDP is the nearest benchmark for what the state has previously collected.
