What it is. External reserves are the foreign currency, gold and other liquid assets that Angola's central bank holds, valued at approximate market prices on the last day of each month. Because the value is a month-end snapshot, price moves in the assets held can change the figure even when no money flows in or out. The measure shows the size of the buffer. It leaves out what the country owes abroad and how much of the stock can be spent quickly.
Higher is better. A larger stock gives the central bank more room to pay for imports, service foreign debt and steady the kwanza, so a higher figure is better. The latest reading, $15.1bn in July 2026, is almost the same as a year earlier, when it was also $15.1bn. It edged down by $0.03bn, or 0.18%, over the year. Since Aug 2024 reserves have ranged from a low of $14.6bn in November 2024 to a high of $15.9bn in February 2026. The current level sits in the lower half of that range, below the early 2026 peak.
Why it matters. For Angola, a reserve stock of $15.1bn that has barely changed in a year means the cushion for import bills and foreign debt payments has been held steady. Firms that need dollars for imports and households exposed to kwanza swings depend on that buffer. The state has little extra room if oil income weakens, so the next reading against the February 2026 high of $15.9bn is the one to check.
