In plain words
$2.3bn
What it is. External reserves are the foreign currency and other liquid assets that Rwanda's central bank holds and can use at short notice. The figure is a month-end snapshot valued at approximate market prices, so it moves with exchange rates and the value of the assets held as well as with inflows and payments. It covers official holdings only and leaves out the foreign assets of commercial banks, firms and households.
Higher is better. A larger stock of reserves gives the central bank more room to pay for imports, service foreign debt and steady the franc in a shock, so higher is better. The latest figure, for August 2026, is $2.3bn, up from $2bn a year earlier, a rise of 14.1%. Since Sep 2024 reserves have ranged from a low of $1.7bn in October 2024 to a high of $2.4bn in December 2024. The current level sits close to the top of that range.
Why it matters. For Rwanda, which buys much of its fuel, machinery and other goods abroad, $2.3bn is a cushion against sudden shortfalls in export earnings or aid. It supports the government's ability to meet external debt payments and helps keep import costs steadier for households and firms. The recovery from the October 2024 low of $1.7bn leaves the central bank with more room to manage currency swings.
