What it is. External reserves are the foreign currency and other liquid assets that the central bank of Seychelles holds and can use at short notice. They are valued at approximate market prices and counted at the end of each month, so the figure moves with exchange rates and with the prices of the assets held, as well as with purchases and sales. For an island economy that imports most of its food and fuel, the stock is the main buffer for paying for those goods.
Higher is better. A larger stock of reserves gives a country more room to pay for imports, repay foreign debt and steady its currency in a shock, so higher is better. The latest figure, for August 2026, is $0.91bn, up from $0.87bn a year earlier, a rise of 4.5%. Since Sep 2024 the low was $0.75bn in November 2024 and the high was $0.93bn in May 2026. The current level therefore sits close to the top of that range.
Why it matters. A reserve stock of $0.91bn gives the central bank more capacity to meet import bills and foreign debt payments for Seychelles than it had in late 2024. Households benefit when this supports a stable rupee, since fuel, food and most consumer goods are bought abroad. Firms in tourism and trade rely on the same stability when they price contracts and pay overseas suppliers.
