In plain words
$10.2bn
What it is. External reserves are the foreign currency, gold and other liquid assets that the central bank holds and can use at short notice. They are valued at approximate market prices and recorded at the end of each month, so movements in exchange rates and gold prices change the figure even when no money moves in or out. Borrowing by the state or the central bank can also raise the total without any gain in the country's own earnings.
Higher is better. Higher reserves are better because they give the country a larger cushion to pay for imports, repay foreign debt and steady the rupee when markets turn. The latest figure, for August 2026, is $10.2bn, up from $9.4bn a year earlier, a rise of 9.1%. Since Sep 2024 the range has run from a low of $8.1bn in September 2024 to a high of $11bn in June 2026. The current level therefore sits in the upper part of that range, a little below its peak.
Why it matters. At $10.2bn, Mauritius has a sizeable buffer for a small island economy that buys most of its fuel, food and manufactured goods from abroad. For households, that supports a steadier rupee and more predictable import prices. For firms and the state, it makes foreign payments and debt servicing easier to manage if tourism income or export earnings dip.
