In plain words
$50.5bn
What it is. External reserves are the official foreign assets the central bank can draw on at short notice, counted at approximate market value on the last day of each month. Because assets such as gold and securities are revalued each month, the total can move with market prices as well as with inflows and payments. The figure covers official holdings only, so foreign currency held by commercial banks and households sits outside it.
Higher is better. A larger stock gives the country a bigger cushion to pay for imports, meet foreign debt payments and steady the currency, so a rising figure is the better direction. Reserves stood at 50.5 USD bn in May 2026, up from 46.3 USD bn a year earlier, a rise of 9.1%. Since Jun 2024 the lowest figure was 44.3 USD bn in June 2024. The latest figure is also the highest in that span, so reserves are at the top of their range for the period.
Why it matters. A reserve stock of 50.5 USD bn gives the Egyptian state more room to pay for imported goods and to meet its foreign debt payments on schedule. For firms that rely on imported inputs, a larger cushion makes it easier to obtain foreign currency when they need it. Households benefit indirectly, since steadier foreign currency supply helps keep imported food and fuel on shelves and eases pressure on the pound.
