In plain words
$3.2bn
What it is. External reserves are the foreign currency, gold and other liquid assets that the central bank and government can use at short notice to pay for imports and settle debts abroad. They are valued at approximate market prices at the end of each month, so the total can move with exchange rates and asset prices even when nothing is bought or sold. Assets that banks, firms and households hold abroad are excluded.
Higher is better. A larger stock gives the central bank more room to pay for imports and to defend the currency in a shock, so higher is better. The latest figure, for July 2025, is $3.2bn, against $3.3bn a year earlier, a fall of 2.6%. Since Aug 2023 the lowest month was Oct 2023 at $2.7bn and the highest was Feb 2025 at $3.5bn. The July 2025 level sits well above that low and below that peak, and the fall of $0.09bn over the year leaves it closer to the top of the range than the bottom.
Why it matters. Namibia's currency is pegged to the South African rand, and the reserves are the stock that backs that peg. At $3.2bn the country holds a buffer that lets importers of fuel, food and machinery obtain foreign currency when export earnings dip. The government also draws on this buffer for its external debt payments. The next monthly readings will show whether the slip from the February 2025 high continues.
