In plain words
$3.7bn
What it is. External reserves are the foreign-currency and other liquid assets that the monetary authorities hold and can use at short notice. They are valued at approximate market prices at the end of each month, so the figure moves with exchange rates and asset prices as well as with purchases and sales. It is a gross asset total, so short-term obligations to foreigners sit outside it.
Higher is better. A larger stock gives a country more room to pay for imports, meet debt payments abroad and steady its currency in a shock, which is why a higher figure is better. Botswana's reserves stood at $3.7bn in August 2026, the same $3.7bn as a year earlier, so the last twelve months brought no change. Since Aug 2024 the series has ranged from a low of $3.4bn in March 2025 to a high of $4.4bn in May 2026. The latest figure sits in the lower half of that range, above the low and below the May 2026 peak.
Why it matters. For Botswana, reserves of $3.7bn are the cushion behind the pula and the supply of foreign exchange that importers and the government draw on. A level that is flat over a year leaves that cushion unchanged for households buying imported goods and for firms that pay suppliers abroad. The state would need to see the figure return towards the $4.4bn reached in May 2026 to rebuild the buffer.
