In plain words

59% of population

What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's people who live in a household with a connection to electricity. It is usually estimated from household surveys and national records, and it can include small solar home systems as well as grid connections. It says nothing about how reliable the supply is, how many hours it runs or whether households can afford to use it.

Higher is better. More people with electricity means more homes with light, refrigeration and phone charging, so a higher share is better. Benin's latest figure, for 2024, is 59% of population, up from 57% of population a year earlier, a rise of 2 percentage points. The 2024 figure is the highest since 2015. The lowest point in that span was 29.6% of population in 2015, so access has roughly doubled over the period.

Why it matters. At 59% of population, around four in ten people in Benin still live without electricity. Those households rely on candles, kerosene lamps or batteries for light, and small businesses without power have little room for cold storage, welding or milling. For the state, closing the remaining gap means extending the grid and supporting off-grid solar to reach rural areas.
