In plain words
13.4% of population
What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's people who have access to electricity, expressed as a percentage of the whole population. Because the base is everyone in the country, the share rises when new connections grow faster than the population. Reliability of supply, hours of service per day and the price paid per unit sit outside the measure.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because each additional point means more people can use electric light, refrigeration and powered tools at home and at work. Chad's latest figure is 13.4% of population in 2024, up from 12% of population a year earlier, a rise of 1.4 percentage points. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a low of 7.7% of population in 2015 to a high of 13.4% of population in 2024. The latest reading is the highest in that span.
Why it matters. At 13.4% of population, most people in Chad live without access to electricity. Those households depend on other sources for light and for charging phones, and shops, clinics and workshops outside the connected areas operate without grid power. For the state, raising the share means reaching a large number of additional people each year, and the next annual reading will show whether the gain of 1.4 percentage points continues.
