In plain words
80.2% of population
What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's people who can obtain electricity in their home. It counts people rather than connections or kilowatt hours, so a household with a weak or costly supply is counted the same as one with a steady supply. The measure says nothing about outages, tariffs or how much power a household uses.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because each additional person with access can light a home, refrigerate food, charge a phone and run a business from the same address. Botswana's latest figure is 80.2% of population in 2024, up from 76% of population a year earlier, a gain of 4.2 percentage points. Since 2015 the low was 62.1% of population in 2015. The 2024 reading is also the highest in that span.
Why it matters. At 80.2% of population, most households in Botswana have power for lighting, cooking and appliances, and a growing share of firms can operate with a grid connection. The remaining households still depend on other fuels and sources, so connecting them through grid extension or off-grid systems is the task for the state. The 4.2 percentage point rise in the last year shows how quickly new connections can lift the national share.
