In plain words
69.2% of population
What it is. Electricity access measures the share of Djibouti's residents who can use electricity at all. Hours of supply, outages and price sit outside the measure, so a household with an unreliable connection counts the same as one with steady power.
Higher is better. Higher is better because electricity access underpins lighting, refrigeration, schooling after dark and most small businesses. The latest figure, for 2024, is 69.2% of population, up from 65.2% a year earlier, a rise of 4 percentage points. It is the highest reading since 2015, when access stood at 59.1% of population, the lowest in that window.
Why it matters. Around seven in ten people in Djibouti can now use electricity, so most households can run lights, fans and refrigerators, and most firms can open workshops and shops with power on site. The remaining share of the population depends on other fuels and on neighbours or generators, which raises costs for families and limits what small businesses can do. Further gains depend on the state extending the network to the households still outside it.
