In plain words
22.5% of population
What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's people who live in a household with a power supply. It is usually built from household surveys and utility records, which gives a headcount of people with a connection or a working source. It says nothing about how many hours of power arrive each day, how stable the voltage is or what the household pays for it.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because each additional person with access can light a home, charge a phone and run a fridge or a machine. The latest figure is 22.5% of population in 2024, up from 22.1% a year earlier, a rise of 0.4 percentage points. The range since 2015 starts at 16.6% of population in 2015, so the 2024 reading is the highest in that span.
Why it matters. With 22.5% of population connected, most people in DR Congo still cook and light their homes with wood, charcoal or other fuels. Shops, workshops and clinics without a grid supply often depend on costly generators, which raises their running costs. The state faces the task of extending lines and local power systems to a population that is still largely unconnected.
