In plain words
65.1% of population
What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's population living with an electricity supply. Figures usually come from household surveys and utility records, and they count whether a connection exists. They leave out how many hours of power people get each day, how stable the voltage is and what the electricity costs.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because each additional person with access can use lighting, refrigeration, phone charging and powered equipment at home or at work. The latest figure for Equatorial Guinea is 65.1% of population in 2024, down from 66.9% of population a year earlier, a fall of 1.8 percentage points. That is the lowest figure since 2015, the start of the window. The high over the same span was 67% of population in 2022.
Why it matters. At 65.1% of population, a large part of the country's people still depend on other sources for light and cooking, such as generators, kerosene or firewood, which cost more to run and are less safe. Firms outside the grid carry the cost of running their own generators. For the state, the fall since 2022 means grid extension has not kept pace with population growth, and the next annual figure will show whether the decline continues.
