In plain words
55.3% of population
What it is. This measure gives the share of Eritrea's population that has access to electricity, expressed as a percentage of all residents. It counts people who can obtain a supply, so it carries no information on how many hours the power stays on, how stable the voltage is or what households pay for it.
Higher is better. A higher share means more people can light their homes, keep food cold, charge phones and run machinery, so a rising figure is good. The latest figure is 55.3% of population in 2024, up from 54.4% of population a year earlier, a gain of 0.9 percentage points. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a low of 45.8% of population in 2015 to a high of 55.4% of population in 2022. The 2024 figure therefore sits just below the top of that range and well above where the series began.
Why it matters. With 55.3% of population connected, a little over half of Eritreans can use grid or other electricity at home, while the remainder rely on sources such as kerosene or firewood. Small businesses and clinics in areas without supply carry the same limits. Further gains depend on extending connections beyond the places already served, and the next annual reading will show whether the series moves above its 2022 high.
