In plain words
53.8% of population
What it is. Electricity access estimates the share of a country's people who live in a household with a usable electricity supply, whether from the grid, a mini-grid or a home solar system. It is usually built from household surveys and census data, then modelled for years between surveys. It records whether a household is connected, and leaves out how many hours of power arrive, how reliable the supply is and what it costs.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because electricity underpins lighting, refrigeration, phone charging, clinics and schools, and every person added to the count is someone with a basic service. Guinea's latest figure, for 2024, is 53.8% of population, up from 51.1% a year earlier, a rise of 2.7 percentage points. That is the highest figure since 2015. The lowest in the same span was 33.5% of population in 2016, so access has risen steadily across the period.
Why it matters. At 53.8% of population, a little under half of people in Guinea still live without electricity at home. Those households depend on candles, kerosene, torches or charcoal for light and cooking, which costs money and harms health. Firms outside the connected areas must run their own generators or work only in daylight, which raises costs and limits growth. The state faces the task of extending the grid and off-grid systems to the remaining population.
