In plain words
77% of population
What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's people who live with an electricity supply. It is usually built from household surveys and utility connection records, and it counts whether a supply exists. Outages, voltage problems and the cost of bills fall outside it, so a household with an unreliable connection still counts as having access.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because each additional person with a supply can light a home, refrigerate food, charge a phone and run a workshop. Kenya's latest figure is 77% of population for 2024, up from 76.2% of population a year earlier, a rise of 0.8 percentage points. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a low of 41.6% of population in 2015 to a high of 77% of population in 2024. The latest reading therefore sits at the top of its range for that span.
Why it matters. At 77% of population, most Kenyan households can use grid or other electric power for lighting, phones and appliances. Small firms with a connection can run equipment such as welders, cold storage and mills. Households still outside the figure rely on kerosene, firewood or batteries, and the state has to extend supply to them, often in scattered rural areas where each new connection costs more.
