In plain words
60.6% of population
What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's people who have access to electricity. It is a headcount of people with a connection to supply, so it says nothing about how many hours a day the power runs, what it costs or how reliable it is. Two countries with the same share can therefore differ a good deal in the quality of service their people receive.
Higher is better. A higher share means more people can light their homes, charge phones and run small businesses on mains power, so a rising figure is good news. In 2024 Lesotho reached 60.6% of population, up from 57.3% of population a year earlier, a gain of 3.3 percentage points. Since 2015 the figure has ranged from a low of 31.8% of population in 2015 to a high of 60.6% of population in 2024. The latest reading sits at the top of that range.
Why it matters. At 60.6% of population, a large share of people in Lesotho still live without access to electricity. Households that gain a connection can study, work and store food after dark, and small firms can extend their trading hours. For the state, the remaining households are likely to cost more per connection to reach. The gain of 3.3 percentage points in the latest year is the pace to compare against when the next annual figure arrives.
