In plain words
49.5% of population
What it is. This measure gives the share of Mali's population living in a household with an electricity connection or an equivalent supply. National figures of this kind are usually estimated from household surveys and utility records and then modelled to cover years between surveys. It counts who can obtain power. Hours of supply, outages, price and the gap between towns and villages all sit outside the national average.
Higher is better. A higher share means more people can use lighting, refrigeration, phone charging and powered equipment at home, so a rising line is the favourable direction. The latest figure, for 2024, is 49.5% of population, down from 54.5% of population a year earlier, a fall of 5 percentage points. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a low of 34.8% of population in 2017 to a high of 54.5% of population in 2023. The 2024 reading therefore sits well above its low and has fallen back from the peak reached a year before.
Why it matters. At 49.5% of population, about half of people in Mali live without access to electricity. Those households depend on fuels such as kerosene, batteries or charging at a neighbour's for basic needs. Firms in areas without a connection often run their own generators, which raises costs. The drop of 5 percentage points in 2024 puts pressure on the state to extend and stabilise the grid so that access returns to the 2023 level.
