In plain words
52.2% of population
What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's residents who live with an electricity supply. Because it counts people across the whole population, the figure rises only when new connections outpace population growth. It leaves out how reliable the supply is, what it costs and how much power a household actually uses.
Higher is better. Higher is better because every additional person with access can use power for lighting, refrigeration, phone charging and work. Mauritania's latest figure is 52.2% of population in 2024, up from 50.3% of population a year earlier, a gain of 1.9 percentage points. The lowest figure since 2015 was 39.5% of population in 2015. The 2024 reading is also the highest in that span, so access is at the top of its range since 2015.
Why it matters. With access at 52.2% of population, a large share of Mauritanians still live without a power supply. For those households that means no reliable refrigeration for food or medicines and limited light for study after dark. Businesses outside connected areas depend on generators or work only in daylight. The state still has a long programme of network extension ahead to reach everyone.
