In plain words
100% of population
What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's population that can use electricity at home, stated as a percentage of all residents. A figure of 100 means everyone counted has a connection. The measure leaves out how reliable the supply is, what it costs and how many hours a day the power stays on.
Higher is better. Higher is better because every percentage point is a group of people who can light their homes, keep food cold and run a business or study after dark. Mauritius stands at 100% of population in 2024, the same as the 100% of population a year earlier. Since 2015 the lowest figure was 99.5% of population in 2020, and the highest was 100% of population in 2019. The latest figure sits at the top of its range.
Why it matters. In Mauritius, households can expect a connection for lighting, refrigeration, fans and phone charging, and firms can site shops and workshops almost anywhere on the island. With connections complete, the state's electricity work turns to the price of power and the reliability of supply.
