In plain words
36.9% of population
What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's people who live in a household with an electricity supply. Estimates usually draw on household surveys and censuses, filled in by modelling between survey years. The measure counts whether a household is connected. It leaves out how reliable the supply is, how many hours of power a household gets and whether the household can afford to use it.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because each additional person with a connection can use lighting, refrigeration and machinery that run on power. Mozambique's latest figure, for 2024, is 36.9% of population, up from 36% of population in 2023, a gain of 0.9 percentage points. That is the highest level in the range since 2015, when access stood at 24% of population. Access has risen across the whole period, and the latest year continues that climb at a steady pace.
Why it matters. At 36.9% of population, fewer than half of people in Mozambique have electricity at home. Households without a connection depend on candles, torches or batteries for light and cannot keep food cold. Firms outside connected areas run on generators or work only in daylight, which raises their costs. For the state, reaching the remaining population means extending supply to people spread across a large country.
