In plain words
21.3% of population
What it is. This measure gives the share of Niger's population with access to electricity. As a share of the whole population, it rises when new connections outpace population growth. It counts access only, so it leaves out how reliable the supply is, how much power people use and what it costs them.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because each extra point means more people can light their homes, charge phones, keep food cold and run equipment. The latest figure, for 2024, is 21.3% of population, up from 20.1% of population a year earlier, a gain of 1.2 percentage points. Since 2015 the share has ranged from 16.6% of population in 2015 to 21.3% of population in 2024. The latest reading sits at the top of that range.
Why it matters. At 21.3% of population, the large majority of people in Niger live without access to electricity. Small firms such as workshops, grain mills and shops that need cold storage have limited options outside connected areas. For the state, each further point of access means extending connections to more people, and the next annual reading will show whether a gain of 1.2 percentage points in a year continues.
