In plain words
62.5% of population
What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's people who have access to electricity. It is a headcount measure, so it rises when more people gain a connection or other source of power, whatever the size of their household. It records whether power is available to a person. Hours of supply, voltage quality and the price paid for each unit all fall outside it.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because each extra person with access can light a home, charge a phone, run a fridge or power a workshop. Nigeria's latest figure is 62.5% of population in 2024, up from 61.2% of population a year earlier, a gain of 1.3 percentage points. Since 2015 the lowest figure was 52.5% of population, recorded in 2015. The 2024 figure is the highest in that window, so the direction over the period has been upward.
Why it matters. At 62.5% of population, most Nigerians have access to electricity, and the remaining share of households still depend on other sources of light and power. For firms, access at this level makes shops, small factories and offices more viable, though firms that need steady supply may still have to plan around their own generation. For the state, each further point of access means more connections to extend, finance and maintain.
