In plain words
72% of population
What it is. This measure gives the share of Rwanda's population that has access to electricity. It counts people who can use a supply at all, and says nothing about how reliable the power is, how many hours it runs or how much a household uses. A single percentage covers the whole country, so differences between towns and rural areas are folded into one figure.
Higher is better. More access means more people can light their homes, charge phones and run equipment, so a higher share is better. The latest figure is 72% of population for 2024, up from 63.9% of population a year earlier, a rise of 8.1 percentage points. Since 2015 the range runs from a low of 22.8% of population in 2015 to the 2024 figure, which is the highest in that span.
Why it matters. A majority of Rwandans now live with electricity available, which lets households study and cook after dark and lets small shops and workshops use powered tools. Firms can set up in more places when a connection is within reach. For the state, the remaining gap to universal access is the part that connection and off-grid programmes still have to close.
