In plain words
77.7% of population
What it is. Electricity access is the share of a country's people who live in a household with an electricity supply. It is usually built from household surveys and utility connection records, then expressed as a percentage of the whole population. It leaves out how many hours the power stays on, the quality of the voltage and the price households pay.
Higher is better. A higher share means more people can light their homes, keep food cold, charge phones and run small businesses, so a rising figure is good news. In 2024 the figure was 77.7% of population, down from 81.3% of population a year earlier, a fall of 3.6 percentage points. Since 2015 the range runs from a low of 67.3% of population in 2015 to a high of 81.3% of population in 2023. The latest reading therefore sits in the upper part of its own range, but below the peak reached a year before.
Why it matters. In São Tomé and Príncipe, households without a connection depend on lamps, fuel or private generators for light and power, which costs them more and limits evening study and home work. Firms and public services in those areas have the same constraint. The 2024 fall is the figure to watch: the next annual reading will show whether the 2023 level is restored.
