In plain words
21.5% of GDP
What it is. Stock market capitalisation adds up the value of all shares of domestic companies listed on the national exchange, at current share prices, and divides the total by the size of the economy. It rises when prices go up or when new companies list, and it falls when prices drop or firms delist. It leaves out unlisted firms, bank lending, bonds and companies listed only abroad.
Higher is better. A higher figure is good because it means more of the economy's business can raise money by selling shares and savers have a wider home market to invest in. The latest reading is 21.5% of GDP for January 2025, up from 20.2% of GDP a year earlier, a gain of 1.3 percentage points. Since 1999 the lowest reading was 16.8% of GDP in 2021 and the highest was 152.7% of GDP in 2022. The current level therefore sits close to the bottom of that range and far below the peak.
Why it matters. At 21.5% of GDP, listed shares are a modest source of funding for Botswana's firms, which have to lean on bank credit or their own profits for most expansion. Households and pension savers have a limited pool of local equities to hold. A small stock market also gives the state a narrow base for raising capital through share sales.
