In plain words
18.2% of GDP
What it is. Stock market capitalisation adds up the market value of all domestic companies listed on the exchange, meaning share price multiplied by shares in issue, and divides the total by GDP. It shows how large the local equity market is compared with the economy it serves. The figure moves with share prices, so it can rise or fall without any company raising new money. It leaves out unlisted firms, bank lending and bond finance.
Higher is better. A higher share means a bigger pool of listed companies that can raise funds by issuing shares, and more local choice for savers who want to own them. The latest figure, for 2024, is 18.2% of GDP. A year earlier it was 19% of GDP, so the ratio slipped by 0.83 percentage points. Since 2011 the range runs from 0.01% of GDP in 2011 to 22.6% of GDP in 2017. The current reading therefore sits in the upper part of its own range, though below the 2017 peak.
Why it matters. At 18.2% of GDP, listed company value in Namibia is large enough to give firms a real route to equity funding alongside bank loans. Pension funds and households can also hold local shares. A ratio that is lower than in 2017 means the market now carries a smaller share of the economy's financing and savings than it did at its high.
