In plain words
27.1% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the stock market value of companies listed on the domestic exchange, which is share price multiplied by shares in issue, and divides the total by annual GDP. Share prices and the size of the economy both move the ratio. Unlisted firms, companies listed only abroad, bonds and bank lending sit outside it. With few listed companies, a price change in one large name can shift the whole figure.
Higher is better. A higher figure means a larger share of the economy's business value is traded on the local market, which gives firms more routes to raise equity and savers more to invest in. The latest figure is 27.1% of GDP for January 2025, down from 36.4% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 9.3 percentage points. Since 2018 the range runs from 15.9% of GDP in January 2018 to 88.6% of GDP in January 2020. The latest reading sits in the lower part of that range, much nearer the low than the high.
Why it matters. At 27.1% of GDP, the listed sector is a modest channel for funding and saving in Seychelles. Firms that want to grow are likely to lean on bank credit or retained profits, and households have a narrow set of local shares to hold. The fall from 36.4% of GDP in January 2024 also means the paper wealth held in listed companies shrank over the year.
