In plain words
17.2% of GDP
What it is. Stock market capitalisation adds up the market value of all domestic companies listed on the country's exchange and divides it by GDP. It shows how large the listed corporate sector is compared with the whole economy. Because it uses share prices, it moves with market sentiment and with the exchange rate as well as with the real growth of companies. Firms that are unlisted, including most family businesses and small enterprises, are left out.
Higher is better. A higher share means listed companies can raise money by selling shares, and investors have a bigger market in which to hold and trade them. That is why higher is the better direction for this measure. The latest figure, for 2025, is 17.2% of GDP, up from 10.9% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 6.3 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 8.1% of GDP in 2022 to a high of 18.7% of GDP in 2017. The latest reading therefore sits close to the top of that range and just below the 2017 peak.
Why it matters. At 17.2% of GDP, the Egyptian stock market is a more significant source of finance than it was in 2022. Listed firms have more room to fund expansion through equity rather than bank loans. Savers have a larger market in which to hold shares. The state also has a deeper market in which to sell stakes in public companies, should it choose to.
