In plain words

10.8% of GDP

What it is. Stock market capitalisation adds up the market value of all domestic companies listed on the exchange and divides it by the size of the economy. The ratio shows how much of national output is held in publicly traded equity. Share price moves change it as much as new listings do. Firms that are unlisted, including most small businesses and informal enterprises, sit outside it.

Higher is better. A higher ratio is better because it means more companies can raise long-term money from investors through the exchange, and savers have more ways to hold a stake in domestic business. The latest figure, for 2025, is 10.8% of GDP, up from 9.2% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 1.6 percentage points. Since 1999 the ratio has ranged from a low of 1.3% of GDP in January 1999 to its current level, which is the highest in that span.

Why it matters. At 10.8% of GDP, the stock market is still small next to the wider economy, so most Tanzanian firms rely on bank loans or their own earnings to grow. Listed companies have a somewhat wider choice of funding than a decade ago, and investors can share in their profits. The state can also use the exchange to raise money and to sell stakes in public companies.
