In plain words

55% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up the market value of every domestic company listed on the exchange, meaning share price multiplied by shares in issue, and divides the total by the country's annual output. It rises and falls with share prices, and also with new listings and delistings. Unlisted family firms, bonds, bank lending and foreign companies are left out, so it describes the stock market's weight in the economy and not the size of the whole financial system.

Higher is better. A higher figure means more of the economy's business value is traded in public markets. That gives firms a route to raise money by issuing shares and gives savers more local assets to invest in. The latest figure is 55% of GDP for 2025, down from 61.1% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 6.1 percentage points. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of 53.3% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 76.9% of GDP in 2021. The latest reading sits just above the bottom of that range and well below the 2021 peak.

Why it matters. Listed companies in Mauritius are now worth a little over half of a year's national output. Households with savings or pensions invested in local shares hold less wealth through listed firms than a year earlier. Companies that want to raise equity face lower valuations, which can push them towards bank borrowing. The 2020 low of 53.3% of GDP is the level to watch in the next reading.
