In plain words
20.8% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the stock market value of all domestic companies listed on Tunisia's exchange, meaning share price times shares in issue, and divides the total by the size of the economy. It moves with share prices as well as with new listings or delistings, so a rally lifts it even when no company changes. Firms that are unlisted, along with bank lending and bonds, fall outside it, so it describes only the equity-market part of the financial system.
Higher is better. A higher figure means listed companies carry more weight in the economy, which gives firms a route to raise money by issuing shares and gives savers a wider choice of where to invest. The latest figure is 20.8% of GDP in January 2025, up from 16.1% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 4.7 percentage points. Since 2016 the lowest reading was that 16.1% of GDP in January 2024. The highest was 21.2% of GDP in January 2017, so the current level sits just below the top of its range.
Why it matters. At 20.8% of GDP, the value of listed Tunisian companies equals about a fifth of a year's national output. A rising share gives listed firms a stronger base for share issues, and gives shareholders larger paper wealth than a year earlier. Companies outside the exchange continue to depend on bank credit and their own earnings.
