In plain words

62.5% of GDP

What it is. Stock market capitalisation adds up the market value of all domestic companies listed on the exchange, meaning share prices multiplied by shares in issue, and divides the total by GDP. The ratio moves with share prices as well as with new listings and delistings. Unlisted private firms and the debt markets sit outside it.

Higher is better. A higher ratio is better because it shows that more of the country's business value sits in public companies, which can raise equity from investors and give savers a way to share in their growth. Morocco's latest figure is 62.5% of GDP in January 2025, up from 46.4% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 16.2 percentage points. Since 2016 the low was 40.9% of GDP in January 2022. The latest reading is also the highest in that span.

Why it matters. For Moroccan firms, a market value that is large relative to the economy makes share issues a more workable way to fund expansion. Households that hold shares, directly or through funds, own assets whose combined value has grown sharply over the last year. Because the ratio follows share prices, the next annual reading will show how much of the gain holds.
