In plain words
327.2% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the market value of all domestic companies listed on the country's exchange, meaning share prices multiplied by shares in issue, and divides the total by a year of national output. It counts only listed firms, so private companies, unlisted businesses and bank lending sit outside it. Because share prices move daily and GDP is an annual total, the ratio can swing sharply when markets rally or fall.
Higher is better. A higher ratio is better because a larger stock market gives firms a deeper pool of equity funding and gives savers more ways to hold wealth. Share prices also reflect investor confidence in future profits. The latest figure is 327.2% of GDP in January 2025, up from 245.7% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 81.5 percentage points. That is the highest reading since 2016, the start of the window. The lowest was 213.5% of GDP in January 2018, so the current level sits at the very top of its range.
Why it matters. For South African households, a ratio of 327.2% of GDP means that pension and retirement savings invested in shares are worth far more than a year ago. Listed firms find it easier to raise money by issuing shares when valuations are high. The state benefits indirectly through a wider tax base on investment income and gains. Because the figure follows share prices, a market fall would pull it down quickly.
