In plain words
7.9% of seats
What it is. This measure counts the share of seats held by women in a country's lower or single chamber of parliament. The Inter-Parliamentary Union compiles it and the World Bank passes it on. It is a snapshot of who holds seats after elections and any later changes of members. It leaves out which committees women sit on, which offices they hold and how much influence they have in the chamber.
Higher is better. A higher share means women hold more of the seats that debate and vote on laws and budgets, so higher is better for this measure. Algeria stood at 7.9% of seats in January 2025, the same as the 7.9% of seats a year earlier, a change of 0 percentage points. Since 2016 the highest figure was 31.6% of seats in January 2016. The lowest was 7.9% of seats in January 2023, so the latest figure sits at the bottom of its range since 2016.
Why it matters. With women holding 7.9% of seats, most of the people who vote on laws on family, work and public spending in Algeria are men. Women who want a measure debated have few colleagues in the chamber to bring it forward. The fall from 31.6% of seats in 2016 means the chamber now looks very different from the one at the start of the period. The next election will show whether the share moves from 7.9%.
