In plain words
44.4% of seats
What it is. This measure counts the seats held by women in Cabo Verde's national parliament and divides them by all seats in the chamber. The Inter-Parliamentary Union compiles the figure from parliamentary records and the World Bank republishes it. It is a snapshot of who sits in the chamber at the time of counting, so it moves in steps after elections or when members are replaced. It says nothing about which committees women chair, how much influence they hold or how they vote.
Higher is better. A higher share means women hold a larger part of the seats where national laws and budgets are decided, which is why a rise counts as progress. The latest figure, from January 2025, is 44.4% of seats, up from 38.9% a year earlier, a gain of 5.6 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 23.6% of seats in January 2016 to a high of 44.4% of seats in January 2025. The current reading therefore sits at the top of its own range for the period.
Why it matters. At 44.4% of seats, women hold close to half of the chamber that passes Cabo Verde's laws and approves the state budget. Households see this in the people who debate and vote on issues such as family law, health and education spending. The share is now far above its 2016 level, and the next election will show whether it holds.
