In plain words

39.6% of seats

What it is. This measure counts the seats held by women in the national parliament and expresses them as a share of all seats. Only the lower or single chamber is counted, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union supplies the data through the World Bank. It records who holds a seat on the date of the count. Committee roles, seniority and real influence over legislation are outside it.

Higher is better. A higher share means the legislature includes more women among those who vote on laws and budgets, so a rising figure is the better direction. Burundi stood at 39.6% of seats in January 2025, up from 38.2% of seats a year earlier, a gain of 1.4 percentage points. Since 2016 the lowest figure was 36.4% of seats, recorded in 2016. The latest reading is also the highest in that period.

Why it matters. Women hold 39.6% of seats in Burundi's parliament, so they take part in a large share of the votes on the budget, taxation and social laws that shape household life. Firms and the state deal with a legislature where women's votes can change the outcome on close decisions. The January 2025 figure is the highest since 2016.
