In plain words
39.1% of seats
What it is. This measure counts the share of seats in Angola's national parliament held by women, taking the lower house or the single house where there is only one. The Inter-Parliamentary Union compiles the figures and the World Bank republishes them. It is a headcount of seats, so it leaves out the roles women hold once elected, such as committee chairs, ministerial posts and party leadership.
Higher is better. A higher share means women hold more of the votes that pass laws and approve budgets, so a higher figure is better for this measure. The latest reading is 39.1% of seats in January 2025, down from 39.5% of seats a year earlier, a fall of 0.45 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 29.5% of seats in 2021 to a high of 39.5% of seats in 2024. The latest figure therefore sits just below the top of its own range, about ten points above the 2021 low.
Why it matters. With women holding 39.1% of seats, they hold close to four in every ten votes in the chamber that writes Angola's laws and debates its budget. That gives women legislators real weight in votes on household matters such as family law, health and schooling. The next annual reading will show whether the small dip from 2024 continues.
