In plain words

13.4% of seats

What it is. This measure counts the share of seats held by women in the lower or single house of the national parliament. The Inter-Parliamentary Union compiles it from parliamentary records, and the World Bank republishes it. It is a snapshot of seat holders at one point in the year, so it follows the result of an election and any later changes in membership. Any upper chamber is left out, as are the posts women hold inside parliament and in government.

Higher is better. A higher share means women take a larger part in writing laws and setting budgets, and the chamber looks more like the country it represents. The latest figure is 13.4% of seats in January 2025, the same as the 13.4% of seats a year earlier. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 9.2% of seats in January 2016 to a high of 14.2% of seats in January 2021. The current level therefore sits close to the top of that range and a little below its peak.

Why it matters. In Côte d'Ivoire, women hold 13.4% of seats in the chamber that votes on the budget and national legislation. Issues such as family law, schooling and health spending are decided by a body where men hold most of the seats. The share has been flat over the last year, so any change in representation depends on the composition of the chamber after the next election.
