In plain words
33.5% of seats
What it is. This measure counts the seats held by women in a country's national parliament, or in its lower or single house, and divides by the total number of seats. The Inter-Parliamentary Union collects the figures from national legislatures and the World Bank republishes them. It covers one chamber only, so it says nothing about women in ministries, local councils or senior civil service posts, or about how much influence the women who hold seats have.
Higher is better. A higher share means women make up more of the body that writes laws and approves budgets, so a higher figure is better for this measure. Chad's latest figure is 33.5% of seats for January 2025, up from 26.1% a year earlier, a rise of 7.4 percentage points. That is the highest level since 2016 in this series. The lowest was 12.8% of seats in 2017, so the share has well over doubled since then.
Why it matters. At 33.5% of seats, about one in three Chadian legislators is a woman, so women now take part in debates and votes on laws affecting families, land, schooling and health in much greater numbers than in 2017. The jump in a single year is large enough that the next reading, and the share after any future change in the composition of the chamber, will show whether the new level holds.
